How to Keep Basic Bicycle Fit Notes Useful

Most bicycle fit notes fail for an ordinary reason: they record a number without recording its meaning. A saddle height written on a scrap of paper may help after a repair, but only if you can tell which bike, which shoes, which pedals, and which measuring method produced it. Useful notes are not a formula for perfect comfort. They are a small, repeatable record that helps you notice changes, return to a known setup, and have a clearer conversation with a qualified fitter or clinician when something hurts.
Start with one note for each bicycle. Give it a plain name, such as “commuter, flat pedals” or “road bike, winter setup.” Record the date and the components that affect contact points. Include saddle model and rail position, crank length if known, pedal and cleat type, handlebar or grip style, tire pressure range, and the shoes you used. A quick photo from each side can be more useful than a long description after a saddle, stem, or seatpost is removed for transport or storage.
For measurements, choose methods you can reproduce. Instead of writing only “saddle: 720 mm,” write “720 mm from center of bottom bracket to saddle top, measured along the seat tube line.” Add fore-aft position clearly: “saddle nose 55 mm behind bottom bracket center, measured horizontally with bike level.” If you use cleats, note their position relative to a visible mark on the shoe sole. Marking a seatpost with removable tape before packing the bike is sensible; permanent marks should not damage carbon parts.
Pair every measurement with a short riding observation. Use neutral, specific language: “left hand numb after 75 minutes on rough pavement,” “comfortable on 30-minute errands,” or “knees felt normal during and the day after a 40-mile ride.” Note route surface, ride duration, temperature, rain, and unusual load such as panniers or a child seat. Windy, wet, cold, or stop-and-go traffic can change posture and fatigue, so a single difficult ride is not automatically evidence that the setup is wrong.
Make one change at a time, then date it. Move the saddle a few millimeters, not several variables at once. Record the old and new position, why you changed it, and at least two comparable rides afterward. This protects you from a common trap: changing saddle height, cleat angle, bar reach, and tire pressure together, then having no idea which change helped or caused trouble. If a shop adjusts your position, copy the new measurements promptly and ask what reference points they used.
Consider a realistic example. Maya commutes 25 minutes each way and keeps getting right-knee discomfort near the end of the week. Her notes show that the discomfort began after she switched to thicker winter shoes and reinstalled a pedal after servicing it. Rather than lowering the saddle based on a guess, she checks that the pedal is secure, confirms that the cleat is not loose, and compares both cleat positions with photos from before the change. She rides easy, short routes while monitoring symptoms. Because the pain persists off the bike and includes swelling, she stops experimenting and contacts a health professional. Her notes make the appointment more productive, but they do not diagnose the cause.
Avoid treating popular fit rules as universal targets. Body proportions, flexibility, injury history, and riding goals differ. Avoid copying another rider’s dimensions, measuring from moving points, or trusting a measurement taken while the bike leans against a wall. Do not use fit notes to justify riding through sharp pain, numbness, weakness, dizziness, or worsening symptoms. Those signs warrant stopping and seeking appropriate medical advice; urgent symptoms need urgent care.
Safety also limits when and where to test adjustments. Check fasteners with the manufacturer’s specified torque, especially on carbon components, and do not ride a bike with damaged parts, loose bearings, uncertain brakes, or a slipping seatpost. Test changes in daylight on a familiar, low-traffic route, not in heavy traffic, on fast descents, during lightning, or in icy conditions. Wear normal safety equipment and leave enough attention for road users, hazards, and changing weather. A professional bike fitter can help with persistent comfort or performance concerns, while a mechanic should address suspected equipment faults.
